Probably the best band in the world, performing a stunning set with superbly talented friends. Thanks to all on stage and those who helped make it happen --- a
great night full of highlights!

It was a rather good night wasn't it? Certainly no evidence of "ring-rust" - the guys and gals hit the ground running. Musical highlight for me
was A Different Sky, which sounded so good live. Also the addition of those special guests made me smile - good to see some old friends again. Great stuff.
Only downside was having to hit the road pretty much as soon as curtain went down, but apart from that it was a great night all round.

What a great gig, quite magical really! Great to have 'First Thought' back in the set after an absence of 4 years and welcome debuts for 'A
Different Sky' (at least as a full band) and 'Until The Story Ends'. And even the Opera House's large stage started to become a little crowded
in the encores when they were joined by Angela, Chris Johnson and Troy Donockley. Still they managed to squeeze in 2 more for the bow at the end when The Judge
joined them and little Harlen made his first stage appearance, taking it to 13 people on stage.
Wonderful stuff! |

I can't remember it all but from memory it included (not in the right order):
Fading Colours Flowers For Guns Caught In A Fold Unoriginal Sin Nowhere To Hide Spirit of Autumn Past Pts 1 & 2 Evergreen First Thought Simple Ways Above The Blue A Different Sky Broken Glass Pocket Watch Tearing At The Faerytale Heroes Never Die Answer The Question I Believe In Father Christmas Finlandia (with Troy) Carpe Diem (with Troy) Until The Story Ends (with Troy) Silent Night (with Angela and Chris) Fairytale of New York (with Angela and Chris) Merry Christmas (with Angela, Chris and Troy) It must have also have been the first gig for a very long time not to have included Never The Rainbow. (edited to include 3 songs I originally forgot)

Both me and my little boy were (still are!) suffering from a pretty potent gastric flu-type bug so Mrs GDog and I had to make the heart-wrenching decision to
abort our trip to York yesterday. Having booked tickets back in July along with our usual hotel sleepover, we'd been thoroughly looking forward to this
show so to say we were disappointed...well you know how you would feel eh. The York gig always has a lovely vibe especially when MA's families and
friends are sat in and amongst the fans. Just great! Back home the greatest torture was sitting in the front room last night glancing at the clock
throughout the evening, picturing the band on stage - Heather performing from her soul, Bryan gettin' that Strat wailing, Anne-Marie going mental with a
tambourine....and two empty seats in Stalls B8 & 9! A-n-yway.... here's to future gigs and we're kinda proud the guys n gals blew the Opera
House away as per normal, nice one everyone!
Would be great to see some pics posted soon and, to echo Pete P's request, can anyone recall the setlist please? Thanks. Keep well everyone! GDog n Mrs GDog PS: Ah setlist just appeared above - cheers Rog!

First time I've missed an Opera House gig but decided to go for Wath on Dearne instead this year as it's nearer to home. Reading the reviews it sounds
like I missed a good one. Roll on 13 December.

I am feeling sad that I missed what looks and sounds like such a great gig, (First Thought is one my favourite tracks, even if I don't quite understand the
lyrics!). A big thank you to those who posted the photos, they are great to see, Heather looks so happy, and Harlan is such a cutie in his little Santa
outfit! I think this Christmas will be a very special one for Heather this year.
Roll on the London gig in February! And although I have already said it, Bryan's new album is great, can't stop listening to "Slow Down." L xx |

What an excellent gig! First chance to see the band this year, and it was well worth the wait! Quite possibly the best time I've seen them, and was
particularly glad to hear 'Answer the Question' back in the set, along with 'First Thought' and 'Simple Ways' (which really rocked!!)
Nice to see Angie and Chris on stage for the encore too, and many members of the MA extended musical family in attendance. I don't remember them playing
'The second Hand', but, if it was towards the end of the set, that could be explained by large amounts of whiskey. We had to dash to make it back to
the 11.07 train, and it was bloody cold outside (with all that beautiful mist) but left with such a warm feeling... again, however, that may just have been the
whiskey!
The band have a really brilliant line up at the moment, that I hope may hold together for a while. Being on such incredible form, it'd be great to hear some kind of live album (though I think there's another thread for this somewhere); if not as a commercial release, then maybe as a bonus if they do a special edition pre-order for the next studio album. Another bonus: picked up Bryan's solo album on the merch stall, and finally had chance to listen to it this evening- it's EXCELLENT! Great photos btw! Mark Charlesworth: Sunise and Shorelines. When did you decide when not to go to York? did you try to sell them on e-bay? Hope you are getting better from Autumn Spirit. |

Hi Autumn S. - we took it right to the wire and didn't want to decide until gig day. It was touch and go all week as to whether we'd pull thru and the
overnight bag was packed ready to go but come Friday morning me and the little guy were still gripped with flu and that finally sealed it, unfortunately. Lost
the hotel and train tkt costs also, despite a plea to the respective parties, so not one of our better weeks, lol.
Thanks for the good wishes - back to work tomorrow so that should be a barrel of laughs! GDog

Agree that it was it a great sound and set - but I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned the lighting on stage. I couldn't see anyone except
Heather from the balcony - all the others were shrouded in darkness - especially the right hand side of the stage. I didn't even know that Chris Johnson
had been on until afterwards !
Was this just a problem from the balcony ? Dave |

Further to Rog's version of the set list, they didn't play 'Second Hand'. The set list was thus:-
1st set:- Fading Colours/Caught In A Fold/Flowers For Guns/Unoriginal Sin/First Thought/Simple Ways/Evergreen/I Believe In Father Christmas. 2nd Set:- Nowhere to Hide/Broken Glass/Different Sky/The Spirit Of Autumn Past parts 1 and 2/Answer The Question/Tearing At The Faerytale/Above The Blue/Pocket Watch/Heroes Never Die/Finlandia/Carpe Diem/Until The Story Ends. Encores:- Silent Night/A Fairytale Of New York/Merry Christmas Everybody. It was great to see the band back where they're at their best, on stage, and the layoff didn't seem to have done them much harm at all, as the first half especially was as good as they've played all year. The second half didn't quite match the heights of the first, maybe because the two songs being played live for the first time didn't seem to gell, IMHO of course. And it was was really good to see Angie and Chris back in the ranks, if only briefly. I also agree with Newent Dave's mention of the lights. Even from Row B, Anne Marie seemed to be playing in the twilight most of the time. Final, and important point, most of the band have been able to continue working during the layoff, keeping the rust at bay, but Heather goes away to have a baby, comes back, plays a prestige gig in front of family, fans and friends, and just nails it. Absolutely brilliant. Carpe Diem, complete with Troy Donockley, was one of the best performances she's ever given, in my experience and was worth travelling to York for on its own. |

As most people who know me are aware, I'm not a big fan of "Glass Shadows" which these days seems to dominate the set. For me it was great to hear the all time classics (IMHO) like Evergreen, Caught In A Fold, Nowhere To Hide, Simple Ways etc. This kind of stuff is the "real Mostly Autumn" to me! I was really disappointed that Never The Rainbow wasn't in the set which, I'm sure most will agree, is a real crowd pleaser.
I totally agree with Paul about the two songs they played live for the first time. Suppose they've got to try them out sometime though. The final song of the second set (before the encore) "Until The Story Ends", I think it was. Personally, I thought it was a bit flat to end with this song and I'm sure something like "Heroes" would have finished on a high and got all of the audience on their feet for a standing ovation instead of the polite few who stood up.
Everyone I talked to mentioned that the lighting was poor. Every other time I've been there the lighting and sound has been perfect. The spotlight was on Heather and Bryan mostly (forgive the pun). Iain, Anne-Marie, Livvy and Liam were lurking somewhere in the shadows (good title for a song eh?). Something else I noticed was that Andy and Anne-Marie rarely made it front stage!?
Having said all that, Karen and I had a great night and the York performance restored my faith in the band and I'm sure I'll continue to support them, because to be honest, I did have my doubts.
We both had a lovely weekend (as usual) in our favourite city. We were spoilt on Saturday night also. Livvy told us that one of her Dad's (God bless him) old bands were playing at The Roman Baths. So we popped along there and were treated to some great rock covers with a surprise guest vocalist singing "Sweet Child O' Mine" The one and only………Livvy!
My only disappointment was that I didn't buy Bryan's solo album after hearing how good it was. Unfortunately, he didn't have any with him at The Roman Baths. Sorry, have to go now and check out Mostly Autumn Records……
