What're people's thoughts and expectations for the new album that Bryan's mentioned?

A continued upward progression from the classy HFOS would suit me fine, especially those atmospherisc tracks such as Find The Sun and Gaze.....perhaps a bigger part on this front for Troy's pipes (if he guests).
This may rise an eyebrow or two but what about incorporating a brass instrument(s) into a track (trumpet, french horn etc)..........and please don't envisage a rock version of The Floral Dance but something, well something, only MA could do. If there is to be a limited edition CD, then what about a bonus disc of 6 or 7 covers ending with a 9 minute studio version of Comfortably Numb. Any other thoughts? |

Oh, now I really like the suggestion of a bonus disc of covers- that'd be cool! But personally, I'd like to see them giving they're all to a really good single disk that sounds really focussed and pollished, and with an April/May deadline and tour they won't have more than a few months by the looks of things.
Never been a big brass fan, but it could work if used to good effect. One of my favourite Porcupine Tree moments is the sax solo in 'Don't Hate Me'! I was converted!! Definitely some more Try Donockley/atmospheric stuff would be great... |

Personally, I am quite happy to put my trust in Bryan, Heather and the rest to come up with quality music that moves me emotionally. They have not let me down yet (despite intial reservations with ever album release !) and I am sure they won't this time.
The one thing that I personally would like to hear is a greater involvement from Angie and more flute ! I am not talking Jigs ! I have always felt that the use of flutes and whistles has always been a significant contribution to the MA sound and that they have been sadly under used on the last couple of albums. The flute simply adds another texture to their rich sound. Also, as they now have several talented vocalists in the band it would be good to hear something with some harmonies to show off their talents together. Stephen C |

I agree with HFoS that I'd rather have a polished single album than a bonus disk. Better still, make that a single disk of 50-55 minutes worth of killer material with no fluff or filler. (I don't think it's a coincidence that all my favourite albums of 2007 are nearer 50 minutes than 70 in length). Take the time to polish the arrangements.
I'd love to have heard Angie play a bigger role than in the last couple of albums, but I expect she's got other priorities for the first few months of next year, so that will have to wait for the album after next I'd like so see them go futher down the melodic hard rock route, more 'Fading Colours' than 'Pocket Watch', possibly even trying some more metal-orientated stuff in the vein of Within Temptation/Nightwish/Epica (If the band really want to crack the much more rock-friendly European market that's the way to go!). I love the big vocal harmonies we've been getting live this year, which added a new dimension to quite a few older songs, and I'd like to hear more where that came from. |

Tim said "(If the band really want to crack the much more rock-friendly European market that's the way to go!).
And if you want to crack mirrors, then looking like Tim is the way to go --------------------- I will be happy to hear what ever Mostly Autumn are going to write/perform /record. I would imagine that this next album will be an emotionally charged CD. So much has happened,so much is happening and so much is going to happen, and I think that the next few weeks will be the time ,that the band are able to get their feelings down onto paper. The new album will be superb as always, and tweaked to perfection,I am sure |

Re: New Album | ||

I agree with Tim. I thought 'Storms...' was really steering the band in a slightly darker, heavier direction, and I'd like to see them picking up on that this time round.
Also, very much with you on focusssing on a short album of really decent, focussed material... Seemingly, Angie won't be taking such a big role on the next record whilst she has some much deserved time away, so I wonder how they're going to fill that spot. Maybe Anne Marie will be on the next album doing some stuff, and some more violin would be great! get Chris Leslie (who played on Passengers) back- not only is he one of the best folk/rock fiddlers around, he's also one of the nicest guys in music! |

I'm not quite sure where the impression that Angie won't have such a big role on the next record came from. There's no reason why becoming a mum will have any effect at all on her contributions in the studio.

That's reassuring. I just thought she may take a bit of much deserved time off! If not, she's a true pro!!

Re: New Album | ||

Contribution? In HFOS, she only play on 3 songs: "Blue Light", "Walk With A Storm" and "Yellow Time". For the backing vocal: 4 songs. On 18 songs, it's very "short" to talk about a real contribution

I agree with Peter, I would be happy to hear anything that MA record. I really like the idea of a video diary this would be an interesting insight, and/or an accompanying DVD would be good. I may be wrong, but I don't think there have been any recent DVD releases.
MA are a brilliant band, and I look forward to the new album, and the concert at the Tavistock Wharf in April. |

Summertimes.I am not sure what point you are trying to make here, other than you dont seem to think that Angela's contribution is relevant to the band?
Maybe I am reading your comment wrong,or I am not grasping what you are saying, but it does seem to me that you are saying just that. The way I see things is that Mostly Autumn, like many other successful bands are made up of many members and each has their own qualities and skills to offer that band. If you removed Angela's flute, piano and vocals from the tracks then they would be totally unfinished. There were a few guest musicians added to HFoS and maybe these people did some of the work that would normally have been done by Angela. I know that Bryan wanted to experiment with different sounds and ideas and the result was the success of HFoS, although it has drawn some different opinions from other people who have bought it. To conclude, I would like to clarify that Angela is pregnant and NOT ill, therefore I am sure we will be seeing a return as soon as she is able to do so. Angela's style is Fantastic, and although she didnt play on every track on HFoS, the ones she did play on are excellent |

Re: New Album | ||

I think Summertimes may have been refering to Angela's less frequent contributions to HFoS as a negative thing, wanting to hear her on more tracks. I read it as a positive statement!
Anyway, the original announcement said there'd be an official statement about this new record in 10 days time. Tomorrow's day 10... |

Re: New Album | ||

I think the point that's trying to be made is that Angela becoming a mum will have no impact on her involvement with the next album, one way or the other.

Have been watching Mr Gilmours concert at the Albert Hall recently on DVD. Comfortably Numb, Echoes and others are outstanding but he never wrote The Night Sky, Evergreen, and countless other tracks which the Mostlies have created. Have faith and we will continue to enjoy quality studio albums and excellent concerts with both musical quality and stunning vocals / harmonies!
By the way does anyone else out there agree that "Softer than Brown" was wonderful ..... |

Relax Pete. Like HFOS say, it's just an obseravation. My english is not so well and i think it's hard for me to explain like i think.
I don't know if Angela was playing more on the others cd, but on Heart..., it's written that she's not played a lot. Of course, i prefar more Angela contribution, cause for me, the magic Autumn touch is the "folk contribution". I don't want to make a lack of understanding . Sorry Pete, thanks HFOS |

Thank you for explaining Summertimes.I think you do well to try and understand our English.
Becoming a Mum, wont affect Angela's ability to contribute to any new albums.Dont forget also that Angela has performed and written with Odin Dragonfly, and maybe she decided to channel her efforts at the time into that project, after all she is the "Gordon" bit of it! |

With MA about to launch in to new album mode, does that mean that Bryan's solo album has now gone on to back burner ?
